Outdoor Recreation

Praise the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty..He who stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of  His upper chambers on their waters.  He makes the clouds His chariot and rides on the wings of the wind...He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved...He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains, They give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the air nest by the waters; they sing among the branches...The high mountains belong to the wild goats...How many are Your works, O Lord!  In wisdom You made them all; the earth is full of your creatures...These all look to You to give them their food at the proper time...May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in His works...I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.  May my meditation be pleasing to Him, as I rejoice in the Lord...Praise the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord. Passages from Psalm 104.

Manning TrailI love spending time outdoors with family and friends.  Whether we are walking, hiking & camping, or canoeing or rafting. I take every opportunity possible to spend time in our Creator's glorious nature.
Living in Idaho offers many opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.  In Riggins, we are surrounded by National Forests and wilderness areas.  The Salmon River flows alongside our little town, and its rapids lull us to sleep on warm nights.  We are located in the second deepest canyon in the United States (the first being Hell's Canyon...only a mountain ridge and 15 miles separate the two).
This area is unique in that rugged hills surround the canyon for miles,  and the low elevation keeps our weather mild during the winter and blistering hot in the summer.  Riggins' claim to fame is that they are the white-water capital of Idaho.  During spring, summer, and fall months, the river is full of rafts and kayaks.  I love to go rafting down the river with my loved ones. The river also is attractive to fishermen.  Bass, trout, steel head, and salmon fishing draws people from all over the country.
Wildlife is abundant here.  We see a moose tend her calf each spring less than two miles from our house.  Elk thrive here, and we often have four and five-point mule deer eating apricots from under our trees.  We have seen bear from our front door and cougar on a day hike.  Although wolf packs are within 10 miles of our home, thankfully we have only seen the tracks of these giant but elusive predators.
For those who enjoy birding, we have golden and bald eagles, osprey, blue heron, and dozens of hawks, as well as the colorful western tanagers, Stellar jays, orioles, tanagers, and goldfinches that feed from our feeders.
However 45 miles to the north or south finds us in forested mountains which boast of quality skiing areas in the winter, and hiking & canoeing opportunities in the summer.  McCall, to the south, is situated high in the mountains on the shores of Payette Lake, where we can escape the summer heat.
Grangeville, to the north, is on the other side of Whitebird Ridge and is located on the Camas Prairie, which is filled with flowers of every hue each spring, and fields of grain and rapeseed as the weather warms.  Curt & I travel to Grangeville at least once a week for church or to take care of errands during the week.
